All candidates for the SGS Football Development Programme must be on a full-time course at SGS College. We offer academic opportunities for vocational/BTEC qualifications, A-Levels and Degree Courses.

The SGS Football Development Programme is based around "Strive to Develop". The participants train with the ambition to develop and progress through the SGS Pathway. The programme supports individuals of all abilities, helping them to develop and grow as both individuals and players, providing them with a number of progression opportunities.

The SGS Football Development Programme offers an effective pathway into the SGS Male Football Academy to allow plenty of opportunities to grow, develop and progress.

The Programme Includes:

  • 2 training sessions per week
  • Individualised development player 1-1's
  • Player performance profiling
  • Competitive fixtures against other colleges
  • Coaches dedicated to player development and team performance

Academy Achievements

Our Football Academy is renowned and has twice been awarded BFPWE in the country by the FA. In 2016 we became the first ever College Football Academy to produce 6 England Internationals in 1 year (3 representing the ESFA and 3 for the ECFA).

In 2019 the SGS Football Academy became the very first College to win both the National ECFA Premier Cup and the National ECFA Knockout Competition in the same season.

The SGS Male Football Academy currently plays in the ECFA Category 1 League (South West) having won this competition 2018/19 and 2019/20. We also have a team that plays in the ECFA Category 2 League (South West).

The College players have the opportunity to represent Mangotsfield Utd U18s in the South West Counties Youth League on Saturdays. We play our U17s in this competition and have been crowned League Champions and League cup winners in 2017/18, 2018/19.

We regularly play professional Football Clubs during preseason with an incredible success rate.

The SGS HE team play in the BUCS League system in division 4A. SGS Higher Education Male Football Academy have been crowned BUCS League Champions in 2018/19 and 2019/20.

The Coaching Team

Tom Wilmot - Lead Coach

Tom is an ambitious, determined and engaging coach, supporting with the development of the programme and helping players to fulfil their potential.

  • English FA level 2 License. MSc Sport Psychology.
  • Tom has coached several teams, taking great pride in helping players develop and enabling them to progress in football. He has coached grassroots youth/adults and at the GFA boys development centre. Working with young players across the foundation phase and youth development phase from ages 8 to 16+ open age.
  • Tom has a range of knowledge from a 20-year amateur playing career and his coaching career. His aim is to use a holistic approach to develop positive relationships to support the progression of students, as footballers and young people.
